November, 2004
The Association sincerely thanks Dressage Waikato for their assistance in running this event in conjunction with the Horsepower Young Dressage Horse class.
Barbara Clarke, Alicia Collin, Paula Jeffries, Stephanie Tovey, and Brigette Learmonth (Sarah Milne absent).
Special thanks to Christine Hartstone and scorer Bronwyn for their work on the day and with fitting the draw together. Also thanks to Jody Hartstone for her sterling liaison work.
The Judges were experienced breeder and rider Carol Harrison and equally experienced rider and trainer Marges Carline - both of course have had international experience in eventing.
The 8 entries covered 6 different stallion's progeny.

This combination also won the Elementary championship for the Waikato 2 day show. (Matthews Hanoverians own a full sister to this horse and her foal by Gymnastik Star has been sold to long-time member and accomplished rider and trainer, Soo Wells, so a combination to look out for in the future).

Vollrath Stud announces the arrival of Vollrath Lessing (Londonderry/Prisca/ Prince Thatch xx) in December to stand as a three-year-old colt in the 2005 breeding season. The dam line has good matches with all the previous Hanoverian stallions and the addition of a Londonderry colt to this country is very exciting indeed. This year’s winner at the the Adelheidsdorf Stallion Performance test was Liberty Gold by Londonderry and several passed the Stallion Licensing in Verden in October.
The 2004 Federal Championship Germany scored the 3 yr old filly La Perla by Londonderry/Weltmeyer.
In the 4 yr old class was the mare Liaison by Londonderry/Gralswaechter Vice Champion.

First round exit for disappointed Hill
Louisa Hill was eliminated from the individual Olympic dressage event after posting a disappointing 62.708 percent in the heat of the day at the Markopoulo Equestrian Centre in Athens today. Louisa Hill was eliminated from the individual Olympic dressage event after posting a disappointing 62.708 percent in the heat of the day at the Markopoulo Equestrian Centre in Athens today.
In her Olympic debut and only the second time New Zealand has competed in the Olympic dressage competition after Sydeny four years ago, Hill was disappointed with the mark she was awarded at the first round.
With 26 horses still to compete tomorrow, Hill was lying in 25th position after today's round so has next to no chance of continuing her Olympic involvement.
Hill's 11-year-old mare, Gabana suffered a knock to a,leg during the 30-hour trip from New Zealand to her German base prior to the Olympics which meant the pair had not been able to take advantage of the specialist training on offer from top coach, Norbet van Laak in Germany. It was a continuation of a series of injuries Gabana has suffered this year and the latest one took the mare 10 days out to recover from.
"We just kept her ticking over, it was only yesterday that we started doing canter pirouettes," Hill said.
"Under those circumstances I am really delighted with her. She wanted to look at everything and look at the crowd and she really tried to stay listening to me." In front of a large contingent of Kiwi supporters, including the New Zealand team's Chef de Mission Dave Currie, Gabana performed very credibly and received some harsh marking from a section of the judging panel. While disappointed with the overall result, Hill remained philosophical. "With all the problems I have had, I am really pleased," she said. "I am a little disappointed with the mark, I felt maybe it would have been more around 66 but that's dressage and that's fine. I am really happy with her.
"I don't feel I let New Zealand down which I was worried about. It was such a neat experience to be in there and riding for your country. There was such a supportive crowd."
Hill's mother Jenny was on hand to see her daughter ride for New Zealand. Hill was grateful of the support from her Federation and the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
"We have had Maori haka welcomes, we all got given our greenstone pendant. I had to put mine in under my bra while I was competing so it didn't bounce around. There was no way I wasn't going to wear it," she said. Gabana will now head to England where she will spend three weeks in quarantine before flying flying back to New Zealand where she will have another two weeks of quarantine. "Officially she has just turned 11 which is pretty young. Maybe we can get to the World Games in two years. One day at a time with horses though, that is my philosophy," Hill said.

Sarah Milne's superstar
Sarah Milne has bred and owned some excellent horses over the years, and now her latest ride proves to be equally talented.
Double O Eight is by super jumping stallion Distelfink out of her mare Hino xx (Drumochter). This makes him a full brother to Diversity and Dice (exported to USA).
Double O Eight won the Young Event Horse class at Taupo in 2003 and has carried on his winning ways by taking out Showhunter of the Year for 2004. Diversity won the Amateur Showhunter title two years ago and the High Points title in the same year.
Sarah and her father, Len Milne, bred Writzmarc (Witzbold) that was sold overseas and represented The Netherlands at the Barcelona Olympics.

News and views
Congratulations!
To the successful applicants of the recently advertised Warmblood Grants 2003/04.
- Sarah Cavill - Lyndgael Sporthorses, Ashburton
Sarah is 26 years old and has been breeding Warmbloods for a relatively short time but has had considerable success with her horses in the Show ring in that time. She has had to overcome a serious physical disability in the recent months but her love of and faith in the horses has kept her positive and focused. Her application was very well presented, had clearly taken a large amount of time and thought. She has shown the Warmblood flag at shows and has a positive plan for her future breeding endeavours.
- John & Angela Smith - Stoneylea Farm, Auckland
John and Angela relocated to South Auckland from the Kapiti Coast just under a year ago with their children and their stud stock. Their aim is to breed horses of a good type and with correct conformation to achieve the demands of international competition. Already there has been the Hahndorf horse Mulberry Walk that has performed at Advanced level in horse trials, and the show jumping star Stoneylea Levitation , both in N Z and Australia.
Stoneylea Farm is persuing the use of frozen semen from Germany plus local licensed Hanoverian stallions to further their aims.
