Video: Prices down at Pride of Poland arabian sale

August 11, 2010

A mare has topped this year's Pride of Poland sale of arabian horses, with a Qatari buyer going to €240,000 to secure Pilar.

Arabian mare Pilar, who sold to Qatar for €240,000.
Pilar, a 14-year-old mare by the Probat stallion Fawor and out of Pipi (by Banat) was Poland's national champion filly in 1997. She was bred at Janów Podlaski, and has had 10 foals, including 2005 Polish national champion filly Pinga. She sold in foal to Gazal al Shaqab.

The second highest priced horse was Ermina, who fetched €90,000. The location of her buyer has not been disclosed. Four-year-old Ermina (Galba x Echidna) sold in foal to the Michalów sallion Kabsztad, and is described as the best progeny of her sire on Polish soil. Her granddam, Elandra, topped the 2005 Pride of Poland Sale, fetching €290,000.

Overall, the 26 horses were sold for a total of €1.026 million, an average of €40,000, per horse.

Buyers came mainly from Europe and the Middle East, one horse sold to South Africa and three were secured by United States buyers.

The prices show a decline from recent years, with 2009 totalling €2.5m, but Janow auction spokeswoman Katarzyna Pruchniewicz was pleased with the average price. "You don't always sell a horse for a million euro," she said.

In 2008, World Champion mare Kwestura sold for €1,125,000, and last year the sale topper was Pinta, who fetched €500,000.

Stop, thief!
Horses - and the collection of gear that accompanies them - are valuable, and pretty much anything with value runs the risk of being stolen.
