Eighteen Californian horses removed from a property before the local SPCA could uplift them have been recovered.
The SPCA in Monterey County confirmed yesterday that it had located the animals and they had been removed to safety.
The operation began at a San Ardo property on Friday, when SPCA officers found 19 horses they said were without adequate food and water.
One horse was found to be very dehydrated and had difficulty standing. She was immediately seized in order to be given medical care.
SPCA investigators and an equine Intern, Dr Steve Loncosky, returned to the property the next day to provide support to the 18 horses remaining on the property. However, all had been removed.
It posted a $US5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the abandonment and/or failure to provide properly for the animals.
The Monterey SPCA confirmed it located the horses and removed them on Tuesday morning.
Seventeen have been taken to the SPCA property, and a stallion has been taken to Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic.
Paris, the name given to the first horse rescued, has been at the clinic since Friday. It is believed that four or five of the horses may be pregnant.
