Eye protection available for horses

April 28, 2010

The FoxPro is shaped like a pair of glasses.

Top polo players are already using the FoxPro to protect their ponies' eyes.

A South American firm has developed two eye protection products for horses.

Argentine company FoxPro says while the range is primarily aimed at polo ponies, it expects the product will also find a market in transporting horses, racing and endurance, and in veterinary care.

It said the range has been approved for use by the Hurlingham Polo Association.

FoxPro says the product, which effectively forms a protective frame around the eye, does not impair a horse's vision.

"Today, there are a significant number of horses that have suffered eye injuries," the company said.

This has in many cases resulted in the animal no longer being able to compete at its discipline, it said.

Polo professional Adolfito Cambiaso, playing off a 10 handicap, said he had tried the protection device and said his horses maintained perfect vision.

Shaped like a pair of glasses, the eye protection can be adjusted to correspond to the structure of the supraorbitary, zygomatic and malar apophysis, all of which form part of the bones that constitute the eye socket.

This allows the horse's central and peripheral field of vision to be free from obstruction.

Prices range from $US145 for the FoxPro with nylon strapping, to $US185 for the leather model.
