The number of people following the recovery of endurance horse Amigo from a terrible injury he suffered in his Tennessee pasture has climbed to 7100 on Facebook.
Amigo was given only a 2 per cent chance of survival after surgery about seven weeks ago to remove a branch that had penetrated his chest and fractured two ribs.
He has fought a series of life-threatening problems, including infection and laminitis, but has overcome every one.
Owner Gary Sanderson, of Luttrell, took Amigo to the University of Tennessee's Large Animal Clinic for treatment following the injury and the horse has been there ever since.
However, vet bills have climbed to more than $US20,000 and Facebook fans and supporters have rallied to help meet the cost.
Gary has taken on part-time work, in addition to his fulltime job in the health and safety field, to help pay for the vet care.
Amigo merchandise is now in the pipeline, which will include long and short-sleeved shirts and lunch/tote bags.
Gary reports that Amigo is continuing to make progress and had a comfortable night.
