Courtney King-Dye

Injured dressage rider Courtney King-Dye has started to breathe on her own off a ventilator for short periods.

King-Dye, 32, is in a stable condition in a coma at St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, following a fall from a horse on March 3.

Her husband, Jason Dye, said yesterday that hospital staff were having Courtney perform 'Windsprints', where she is taken off the ventilator for set time periods to let her breathe on her own.

"She performed great as we all expected she would. They will continue this process until she can comfortably breathe on her own," Dye said.

"It made me happy knowing Courtney would want to be getting some exercise."

He said Courtney's room is filling rapidly with cards and messages of support coming from all over the US and the world.

"The outpouring is truly impressive. Thank you for all the positive energy, prayers and thoughts flowing in Courtney's direction," Dye said.

• Messages of support for Courtney can be sent to comebackcourt@gmail.com and cards can be sent to Courtney Dye, 2442 Muir Circle, Wellington, FL 33414.
