The zebra who ran loose in Atlanta, Georgia, after escaping from a circus handler has been euthanised.

Lima, a 12-year-old gelding from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, was taken to the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine with damaged and bleeding hooves after running through city streets for about 40 minutes.

Ringling Bros. veterinarians, working with the veterinary team at the University of Georgia, performed extensive examinations and tried numerous medical treatments to repair damage to Lima's hooves. "Sadly, the treatments were not successful," Ringling Bros. said.

The circus extended its appreciation to the veterinarians and other staff at the University of Georgia for the diligent and expert care they provided to Lima.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident in Atlanta were immediately reviewed and within 24 hours United States Department of Agriculture officials were onsite," Ringling Bros. said.

"Corrections to procedures were promptly implemented. In addition, management has evaluated and will continue to review company policies and procedures to ensure that its animals remain safe and secure," the company said.
