Mare saved from ditch

March 12, 2010

The mare was lifted from the ditch by firefighters using a hiab.

Firefighters have lifted a mare to safety from a ditch at Emersons Green, in southern Gloucestershire, England.

The Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to the area on Sunday after a woman out riding noticed the animal in the ditch and could see it was unable to stand.

"When crews arrived they found the animal very weak," a fire service spokesperson said.

It was thought the animal had been trapped for up to 12 hours.

Working alongside a vet and a team from Horseworld - a horse rescue charity - a harness was secured around the horse.

Then, using the hiab from the rescue tender, rescuers were able to lift the animal to its feet.

"After a short time the horse was able to stand on its own and was left in the care of the vet and Horseworld."
