A company which markets solar-powered high-visibility lights believes riders should be wearing them even on sunny days to improve safety.
Pedalite's new battery-free flashing safety lights for equestrians were showcased at the recent British Equestrian Trade Association Innovation Awards.
Its solar-powered Anklelite/Armlite provides visibility at windscreen/wing mirror height to keep horse riders seen. It weighs about the same as a box of matches and attaches using velcro.
The company says the Anklelite/Armlite is so cost-effective it pays for itself in one season through the elimination of buying replacement batteries.
It also has a light to fit over a backpack.
The company says the flashing lights have been rigorously tested on young and nervous horses, saying they quickly became acclimatised to the lights or showed no reaction.
Eileen Hall, managing director of British Pedalite distributor, Equestrian Supplies Ltd, said for years horse riders had relied on "passive safety" products, such as fluorescent and bright coloured clothing, to be seen.
These reflected light back to the source.
Equestrians, she said, were beginning to realise the need for lighting even during daylight hours, not just at dawn or dusk.
Riding under trees, bridges or through the shadows of stable/buildings or clouds changes how well a horse and rider are seen.
The lens on Pedalite products make the lights appear brighter the further away you are in daylight, shadow or darkness.
"They complement passive safety products like reflective clothing and enhance safety by ensuring riders can always be seen."
Pedalite's battery-free dafety products are sold in more than 45 countries by thousands of distributors and retailers.
