Old age claims Isabell Werth's Fabienne

February 10, 2010

1992 Dressage World Cup winner Fabienne, who spent her retirement with Gigolo, who died late last year.

Isabell Werth's former top dressage mare Fabienne died late last month at the age of 29.

With Werth, Fabienne was a top performer in the 1990s and won the dressage World Cup Final in Goteborg in 1992.

She had been retired to Werth's property along with Gigolo, who died last September.

Werth said that the mare had weakened in her final days. "Before her breakdown she had always been fit and in good shape even though she was nearly 30 years old.

"But we had to put her down. During the last years she had enjoyed her life with Gigolo, who died last September, on the pasture. Now the two of them can graze together again somewhere up there ... I am very sad but I console myself knowing that they both had wonderful retirement here at our place."
