Ebenezer the donkey is making good progress at the Missouri veterinary clinic where he has gone for treatment.
Ebenezer, 30, is the community favourite in Grandview, where residents donated $US5000 in days for his health care after a story in the Kansas City Star.
He also received more than 300 cards from wellwishers.
The donkey has been a fixture in his paddock on the outskirts of the town for most of his 30 years and always had a friendly greeting for anyone who stopped by.
The fundraising has allowed Ebenezer to go to Equine Health Solutions, a veterinary clinic in Raymore, where his followers are able to monitor his progress on Facebook.
Ebenezer, who is owned by an elderly World War 2 veteran, Ben Alvarado, had a lung infection, was in need of dental attention, and suffers from white line disease of the hooves, as well as arthritis in his neck.
He is now something of a celebrity, with an appearance on Fox 4 television - not to mention the front-page story in the Kansas City Star that shot him to fame.
Equine Health Solutions reports on Facebook that Ebenezer's lung infection has been successfully treated, and his feet are responding well.
He was anaesthetised and had his teeth work done.
Shirley Phillips, who, since September, had been stopping by twice daily to provide supplementary meals to Ebenezer, confessed on Facebook:
"I miss Ebenezer ... I've been feeding him twice a day for almost six months and it's weird not seeing him. But I know he is resting comfortably and he is out of the weather. Love you Buddy!"
