Bidding is strong for the seven former San Diego police horses who are being sold by online public auction.
Wam, Trigger, Major, Junior, Bret, Bandit and Austin have done their duty. They are being sold because the city of San Diego has disbanded its mounted police unit as part of cost-cutting measures.
With a week still to run on the 10-day auctions on Publicsurplus.com, all the horses have attracted multiple bids.
The top bid so far is for Junior, at $US8000, with 65 bids so far recorded.
Bret, Major and Austin are all at $US4050, with Bret and Austin each having received 40 bids, and Major 41.
Bandit is at $4100 after 35 bids.
Trigger has received 26 bids to reach $US3650 while Wam has received 28 bids and stands at $US3600.
Surplus horse gear from the department is also being auctioned.
The unit began operating in 1983. Its officers have been assigned to other duties.
Potential bidders were able to see the horses on February 4 at the police stables. No riding or handling was permitted.
