Sending a message by delivering a horse's head can get you in trouble - even if it's only a toy.
The gesture landed a New Jersey man in his local county jail.
It seems the message from sending a horse's head - a gesture enshrined in folklore through a scene in the 1972 mobster movie "The Godfather" - is unmistakeable, even if it happens to be a toy.
The packaged head was hand-delivered to the West Deptford office of state Senator Stephen Sweeney, president of the New Jersey State Senate.
The staff member opening it was sufficiently concerned to call the police.
The bomb squad destroyed it and inquiries led to a 61-year-old man from Wenonah, who was arrested and taken to Gloucester County Jail.
A state police spokesman said: "We take every interaction with our government officials seriously, at least of this nature. This was obviously alarming to the staff that received the package."
The man faces a charge of harrassment but authorities are considering whether the charge should be changed.
Local reports said bail was set at $US25,000
