Roadside shootings of horses and cows in three Wisconsin counties have prompted the Humane Society of the United States to offer a $US2500 reward.
The most recent of the shootings were last week, between 3am and 5.30am in northern Dunn County, where three horses were shot.
A horse was shot and wounded in the rear quarter, and died a short time after, on 1450th Avenue in the township of New Haven. Another horse was shot in the head and killed on County Road V, also in New Haven, and the third fatal shooting was on 490th Street in the township of Sheridan.
Around the same time in Barron County, about 400 metres from the residence at 1450th Avenue, two cows were shot in the head on Barron-Dunn Avenue. One was found dead on the scene, and the other will likely be euthanized in the next few days.
All the animals appear to have been shot from the road.
Barron County Sheriff's Office also reported three additional cows were found shot on 12th Street in the township of Dallas.
St Croix County Sheriff's Office also received reports of horses being shot. On November 19, two horses were shot and killed on County Road S in the township of Emerald.
An additional horse was shot and killed on November 22 on County Road P in the township of Emerald.
"These helpless animals were shot to death, and the killer needs to be held accountable," said Alyson Bodai, the society's Wisconsin state director.
"This kind of intentional cruelty to animals is unacceptable to the people of Wisconsin, and those responsible for these senseless deaths need to face a stern penalty."
