A British sentry shot dead a donkey in Afghanistan on suspicion the animal had been let loose with explosives.
The soldier saw the animal, carrying what appeared to be hay on its back, released and chased towards a military facility in the province of Helmand.
Flares failed to turn the animal away and the soldier shot it.
A flare was used to ignite the hay on its back and a substantial blast followed shortly after.
Afghan Army soldiers had reportedly warned British troops of talk that donkeys might be used in attacks.
