Authorities have seized 11 horses from a property in Newton Falls, Ohio. One Clydesdale was estimated to be 700 pounds underweight.
Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary removed the horses, as well as a calf, a goat, three chickens and three guinea fowl, at the request of the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office.
A woman, 28, has appeared in court on two cruelty-related charges. She has pleaded not guilty.
"Please know that all horses are currently under veterinary care and being cared for round-the-clock to monitor them for colic as their systems begin to get used to having proper nutrition," the rescue group said.
"We'd like to thank the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department for calling animal abuse 'animal abuse', and for not turning a blind eye to the starving horses involved in this sad and disturbing case."
Most of the horses removed were assessed by a veterinarian as having a body score of one on a nine-point scale, the charity said.
One appeared to have severed tendons in its right front leg.
"As all court cases go, we will keep everyone posted to the extent we are permitted," the group said. "Thank you for your concern, for your prayers for the horses, and for helping to acknowledge and elminate animal abuse in our Ohio counties."
This horse has been taken to OSU for evaluation, with what appears to be a severed tendon.
