Ira Hanford, the jockey who won the 1936 Kentucky Derby has died in Florida at the age of 91 after a long illness.
As an 18-year-old apprentice Ira "Babe" Hanford rode Bold Venture (20-1) to an upset win in the race. The horse won The Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, without Hanford aboard, as he was suspended for 15 days after the Derby.
Hanford retired from race riding in 1953 without getting another Derby start.
Hanford is survived by his wife, Virginia, and older brother Carl, trainer of the famed Kelso.
