The 18-carat gold 1952 Melbourne Cup has been sold to a prominent Queensland thoroughbred breeder.
John Barnes, who owns Canning Downs, paid $A86,400 for the trophy, which came up for auction in Melbourne.
The trophy was won by four-year-old stallion Dalray, ridden by Bill Williamson. Dalray was one of the race favourites.
Dalray retired with an injury not long after the cup win and spent the rest of his life at Canning Downs, where he had a successful stud career.
