Respected US thoroughbred trainer Bobby Frankel died on November 16 in California due to complications associated with lymphoma. Frankel was 68.
Frankel had beaten lymphoma several years ago but in recent months it returned. He had dispersed many of his horses while he was undergoing treatment.
In his last full year of training, in 2008, his stable won nearly $12 million and 93 races. In his career, he won 11 Group One races, 3654 races and nearly $228 million. He was second on the all-time money earning list in the US.
Among his top horses were Empire Maker, Ventura, Aldebaran, Bertrando, Ghostzapper, Ginger Punch, Intercontinental, Leroidesanimaux, Possibly Perfect, Ryafan, Squirtle Squirt, Wandesta, and Medaglia d'Oro.
Canterbury veterinarian John Shaw
Canterbury veterinarian John Shaw died last month at the age of 70 after a long illness. In later years Shaw ran a veterinary clinic in Prebbleton and also a thoroughbred breeding operation. He was among the first to be associated with the use of frozen semen in New Zealand standardbreds.
Shaw is survived by his wife, Heather, and four children.
