Police investigate following horse shooting

November 15, 2009

Police are investigating after a horse was shot in the head and left to die in Garfield County, Colorado.

There is evidence the horse was taken to the scene in a horse trailer before being shot in the head. It survived and is receiving veterinary care, although its long-term prognosis remains unclear.

The injured horse, a grey gelding in his late teens or early 20s, was found near Interstate 70 last Monday.

A small-calibre weapon is believed to have been used in the shooting. The animal appears to have walked or run some 800 metres from where the evidence suggests it was shot.
