Authorities have seized 12 horses from a property in South Dakota and charges are pending against the owner.
The animals were removed on Wednesday from a property in McCook County. The operation was carried out by the McCook County Sheriff, assisted by humane officer Dana Wigg.
The sheriff had a search warrant issued over concern for the well-being of the horses.
Eleven of the horses were taken to the Second Chance Rescue Centre, while one went directly to the Dakota Large Animal Clinic for additional veterinary care. A local report said the animal had a punctured eyeball which needed removal.
The rescue centre said the horses were examined by the clinic's Dr Michelle Jensen.
Officer Wigg and Dr Jensen found the animals in poor condition and in need of proper feed and shelter. They remain under the care of the centre.
It said it would welcome help in the care of the animals. It would appreciate donations of sweet feed, grass hay, and alfalfa hay. Monetary donations can be sent to Dakota Large Animal Clinic in Harrisburg to help with medical expenses.
A decision has yet to be taken on whether action will follow against the owner.
