Hendra test results should be known today

September 15, 2009

Results of tests on 18 horses potentially exposed to the dangerous Hendra virus should be known today.

Queensland's Department of Primary Industries said the horses all appeared healthy at this stage.

The alert was sparked on September 8 when a horse that died on a property near Bowen, in North Queensland, returned a positive test for the virus, which is carried by bats.

While no horses remain on that property, the three surrounding properties and the 18 horses that live on them have been quarantined, pending the outcome of tests on the animals.
