Hendra restrictions widen near Rockhampton

September 2, 2009

A total of 64 horses across 25 Queensland properties are now under restrictions following the Hendra outbreak at a property at Cawarall, near Rockhampton.

The outbreak began nearly a month ago at J4S Equine Nursery, where four horses have died, three of which were confirmed as dying from infection with Hendra virus.

Primary Industries Minister Tim Mulherin said the wider restrictions resulted from information sessions held by Biosecurity Queensland in the area, which resulted in more people coming forward whose horses had been in contact with the property.

The horses at the centre of the latest restrictions are considered to be at low risk of infection. The J4S cases resulted in the seventh case of human infection with the virus.
