Carriage horse falls and breaks leg

August 3, 2009

A carriage-horse transporting a couple celebrating their wedding fell and broke its leg, according to media reports in Portland, Oregon.

A police spokeswoman said the horse, Balatore, was aged 23 and died after the fall. It is thought the horse suffered a heart attack. The death came on the ninth day of a heat wave in the city, where temperatures exceeded 90F degrees (32º). Animal control officers helped get the horse off the road, Fox 12 in Oregon said.

EHV-1 hits French stable, four horses dead

August 3, 2009

Thehorse.com reports that four horses in a boarding stable of 63 in Northern France have been euthanised after contracting equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in the past three weeks.

Three other horses have tested positive and one is ill, and the stable will remain under quarantine for at least another three weeks. The report said all but one of the seven who tested positive for EHV-1 had been vaccinated.

Treating veterinarian Jeroen Lissens, DVM, said the symtoms led him to believe the horses had been hit by a mutated strain of EHV-1.
