First Secretariat movie star identified

August 27, 2009

The quest for Secretariat lookalikes to star in a Disney movie about the legendary racehorse has turned up its first star - a three-year-old thoroughbred called Larry.

Larry is owned by Heather Benson, who manages the North Dakota Horse Park.

She entered Larry in an online casting call for the role.

The movie makers are after several similar-looking horses to play the 1973 Triple Crown champion.

Under the deal, the horse is sold to Disney, but she gets him back at the end of filming.

Training of the Secretariat equine stars will be handled by well-known trainer Rusty Hendrickson.

While Larry might not have all of Secretariat's markings, makeup artists will be able to work their magic.
