Police seize 85 horses in Oklahoma

August 21, 2009

Garvin County Sheriff Steve Brooks

Deputies have seized 85 horses in poor condition from a ranch in Garvin County, Oklahoma. Three of the animals had to be euthanized.

The animals were removed from a property in Pauls Valley and have been taken to the Wynnewood rodeo grounds to receive immediate care.

Garvin County Sheriff Steve Brooks told Horsetalk the animals would remain at the facility for several days. They had been given Coggins tests and received veterinary care, including worming.

A farrier would visit tomorrow to trim their feet.

Sheriff Brooks said the horses were owned by a woman and her mother. "They became way too many horses for them to handle," he said.

He said at least four horse carcasses were found on the property.

The animals at Wynnewood had been surrendered to authorities, he said, and would ultimately be placed with horse rescues within the state for rehoming.

A meeting on Monday would decide whether charges would he laid.

He said his department was currently investigating another possible case of horse neglect involving 11 animals, about 5km west of Wynnewood.

"We are fixing to get 11 more," he said.

Sheriff Brooks said such animal welfare investigations were the responsibility of the sheriff's department.

He said there were deputies in his department experienced in handling horses, and they are assisted in such investigations by Oklahoma State Veterinary Board investigators.

Stop, thief!
Horses - and the collection of gear that accompanies them - are valuable, and pretty much anything with value runs the risk of being stolen.
