Embryo recipient mares died of dehydration

July 4, 2009

Authorities are investigating the deaths of 11 mares from a herd of about 29 embryo recipient broodmares on a ranch in North Texas, who apparently died of dehydration.

They were owned by a Weatherford, North Texas breeder, who had paid a worker to tend the horses.

A local police officer said the well that fed the troughs had stopped pumping. The Parker County Attorney would decide this week whether to prosecute. The horses were buried in a mass grave on Thursday.
