Embryo recipient mares died of dehydration
July 4, 2009
Authorities are investigating the deaths of 11 mares from a herd of about 29 embryo recipient broodmares on a ranch in North Texas, who apparently died of dehydration.
They were owned by a Weatherford, North Texas breeder, who had paid a worker to tend the horses.
A local police officer said the well that fed the troughs had stopped pumping.
The Parker County Attorney would decide this week whether to prosecute. The horses were buried in a mass grave on Thursday.

The US Jockey Club has added access to its markings database to the free Tattoo Identification Services it offers. The free tattoo identification service was unveiled in April to help owners identify tattooed but unknown Thoroughbreds in their possession. Since April 15 the club has received more than 1700 requests for tattoo identification assistance via e-mail and close to 14,000 tattoo lookups were performed online.
