A horse adoption fair in Kentucky has raised $US15,000 to help with state horse health and welfare programmes.
The Second Annual John Henry Memorial Adoption Fair helps connect adoptable horses with long-term homes and raises funds for SoHo (Save Our Horses), a programme run by the Kentucky Horse Council.
Twenty-six sound, trainable horses were presented both in-hand and under saddle, while 18 rescue organisations ran information booths. A silent auction featured roughly 150 donated items.
Under the direction of Judy Miller, the fundraising portion of the event received donations from local supporters throughout Kentucky and donors from as far away as California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, and New Jersey.
In all, companies and individuals from 18 states provided items and gift certificates which raised nearly $US15,000 to support horse programmes.
"We're so happy to partner every year with the Kentucky Horse Park," said Kentucky Horse Council president Madelyn Millard.
"The outpouring of support for SoHo through the Adoption Fair and other venues enables the Kentucky Horse Council to help horses, rescue agencies, and authorities work toward a solution for unwanted horses. Kentucky is gaining recognition as a national leader in horse welfare programmes."
The SoHo fund provides feed and veterinary care for Kentucky horses confiscated as part of a pending court case, feeds horses whose owners have suffered a recent job loss, supports the council's geld voucher programme, and enables the council to provide training to animal control and law enforcement officials throughout Kentucky.
