Olympic dressage rider Heath Ryan is recovering in a Sydney hospital from what has been confirmed as a small stroke during a competition last weekend.
Ryan, 50, was taken to Campbelltown Hospital on Sunday after falling ill at the Sydney CDI three-star event. The rider became dizzy and started vomiting at the event.
An MRI scan this week confirmed that he suffered a minor stroke.
Ryan's wife Rozzie told ninemsn news that doctors said Ryan should make "a 100 per cent recovery quite quickly provided he doesn't overdo it."
She told ninemsn that Heath's speech was normal but he was still dizzy at times.
Ryan returned home only in the past few weeks from competing at the World Cup dressage final in Las Vegas. He represented Australia at the 2008 Olympic Games and has also evented to a high level. He has also been assistant coach for the Australian equestrian team at three Olympic Games.
In the late 1980s Ryan played in the Australian Under 23 rugby union side against England.
