Woman's walk highlights plight of unwanted horses

April 10, 2009

A Colorado woman has crossed into Virginia in her bid to walk across the United States to raise awareness about the plight of American horses.

Kristina Kremer, 32, from Capulin, was not originally intending to do the walk because of commitments at home, which include the running of an animal rescue facility with more than 120 horses in its care.

However, the original walker, Eric Wilson, from Ohio, crashed his bike and badly broke his ankle and shoulder, requiring immediate surgery.

There was only one person left willing to undertake the walk - Kristina.

She has not been deterred by her lack of preparation, saying "We'll find help along the way".

Kristina says the animal rescue she operates with her husband is surrounded by Colorado feedlots.

She says she sees three to four truck and trailer-loads of horses leaving for the slaughterhouses in Mexico every week.

She views this as a great American tragedy and set about on the trans-Continental walk to raise awareness of the mistreatment of horses.

Her walk began in Newark, Delaware, and her destination is Long Beach, California.

She is hopeful of plenty of support along the way. She began her journey with just one pair of sneakers - and they already had holes in them.

At last report she was in Virginia, having passed through Fairfax and Chantilly.

"I'm walking to make people aware of the abuse, neglect and mistreatment of horses," she says.

Things got off to a slightly shaky start when she missed the bus taking her to the start of her walk.

"I missed my bus because the local sheriff called me to help when a woman holding a gun threatened to shoot her two horses and herself because she couldn't afford to feed them after losing her job and didn't want them to go to a slaughterhouse."

Kristina then arranged to have them picked up and taken to her rescue.
