Outbreak among police horses kills four

April 5, 2009

Authorities fear that equine flu is behind the deaths of four horses in police stables in Ahmedabad, Gujarat province.

The Times of India reports that 12 other police horses have come down with the infection, first noted on March 31.

Blood samples have been taken from the animals for testing and veterinarians have been called in to help control the outbreak.

India had more than 5000 cases of equine influenza last year in an outbreak reported to the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE).
