Kentucky Derby winner Lil E. Tee dies

Lil E. Tee, the upset winner of the 1992 Kentucky Derby, has died at the age of 20 after suffering complications following bowel surgery.

Lil E. Tee was euthanised at Old Frankfort Stud in Lexington on Wednesday after failing to recover from an operation last month to repair his bowel, which was obstructed.

The son of At The Threshold and Eileen's Moment (For The Moment) beat the highly favoured Arazi at odds of 17-1 at Churchill Downs, ridden by Pat Day. As a weanling emergency stomach surgery saved his life. He was considered to have little racing potential, and was sold for $2000 as a yearling.

He retired with seven wins in 13 career starts. He was the subject of a book titled The Longest Shot in 1996.


New president for quarter horse assn

Jim Helzer of Arlington, Texas, has been elected the 59th president of the American Quarter Horse Association, the world's largest equine breed registry. Helzer is CEO and President of JEH Stallion Station and other JEH companies. JEH Stallion Station is a commercial horse breeding operation and the other companies are real estate and investment businesses.

Born in Loveland, Colorado, Helzer began racing American Quarter Horses in Colorado in his home state in 1962. Since then, the Helzers have successfully raced Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds throughout the United States. The most noteworthy of these was Refrigerator, world champion in 1992 and 93, and quarter horse racing's leading all-time money earner at $2,126,309.


Memphis barn fire claims 19 horses

Nineteen horses have died in a stable fire in Memphis, Tennessee, which has been traced to an electrical cause.

The Raleigh barn, which ignited on Wednesay night, was agisting the horses for individual owners.

One horse initially survived the blaze by escaping through doorsbut was later euthanized because of injuries.


Vere Phillips badly injured in fall

Former British event rider Vere Phillipps was temporarily paralysed after a fall from a young horse at his home late last month. Phillips was airlifted to hospital and was regaining some movement in his legs on arrival.

Phillipps, 47, was diagnosed with a bleed in his spinal cord, according to Horse & Hound. His wife Clea said he was now moving around but in pain, and doctors had warned him against working with young horses in the future.

Phillipps's first wife, Polly, was killed in an eventing accident at Thirlestane Castle in 1999.


Top British dressage horse dies

British dressage has reported the death of Warlock, the horse ridden by Lara Griffith to the 2008 Intermediaire I Freestyle Winter Championship, and a team representative for the 2008 Young Rider European Championships.

Warlock, known as "Wally", was put down on February 22 after the 17-year-old gelding fractured a hind leg in the field.

Griffith, who had the ride on the 16.2hh Werther offspring since 2006, was the only Brit to go through to the freestyle at the YR Europeans, finishing 12th.


Canadian Olympic horse retired

Canadian Olympic team eventing horse Livewire has been retired from top-level competition following a minor injury.

The 10-year-old was ridden at the Olympics by Samantha Taylor, who has owned him since he was two.


Canada lifts import restrictions on Florida horses

March 2, 2009

Canada has lifted its import restrictions on horses from Florida after the US state declared it was free of the parasitic disease, equine piroplasmosis.

The change was announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
