The Arezzo three-star showjumping competition has just wrapped up in Italy, and the Grand Prix was won by Sweden's all-conquering hero, Rolf-Goran Bengtsson riding Ninja la Silla, after a 13-horse jump off.
He was one of only three riders to go double clear, the others being Hungary's Balas Krucos on KN Colorado who was second and Frenchman Kevin Staut who rode Le Prestige De St Lois into third place.
Both the first and third are involved in the Global Champions Tour which starts on Thursday, so this was a good warm up for them. However, Staut was rather lucky to make the second round at all after Le Prestige (whom he has only been riding for six months) bucked him clean off after the finish. The horse was so exhuberant in his display that he failed to keep his own feet when he hit the ground but leapt up none the worse for wear and disappeared around the rather large arena at a very great rate! He was much better behaved in the jump off and clearly just needed a gallop! Staut will be riding his more well known and slightly better behaved stallion Kraque Boom this week.
Edwina Alexander jumped good clear rounds on both Itot du Chateau and Isolav Socrates in various classes and described the former as 'bright' when he looked a bit of a handful in the main arena. The horse is just back in full work from his holiday after Olympia and looking very good, but thinking of the coming week Alexander did not take part in either jump off at the weekend.
