SPCA continues appeals for 43 horses in its care

March 28, 2009

A Virginia SPCA branch is continuing its appeal for help with feed and supplies for the care of 42 horses seized from a property.

The Augusta Regional Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals launched its appeal for processed feed, hay, feeding tubs, wormers, grooming supplies, salt blocks, halters and lead ropes to help meet the requirements of the animals.

Many of the animals were described as malnourished, with a majority said to score 1 or 2 on the 10-point Henneke body condition scoring system.

Local media reported that a judge had ordered the animals' owner to surrender them to authorities.

Waynesboro animal control officers are continuing their inquiries.
