A statue commemorating super racehorse John Henry is under way. The statue will be a part of a small park at the grave site of the legendary horse, at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The statue is being created by world-renowned equine sculptor Shelley Hunter. She will be creating the piece in her studio at the horse park, and the public are able to watch the work in progress.

Bill Oster, chairman of the John Henry Memorial committee, said that "it is a unique opportunity for the public to watch an historically significant statue being created."

Hunter, who is the Executive Director of the American Academy of Equine Art, is a graduate of Michigan State with a BA in Art. The headquarters and studios of the organization are at the Kentucky Horse Park.

"Having my office and studio within viewing distance of John Henry for all those years makes this very special to me," said Hunter. The sculpture is scheduled to be finished by the end of May and then it will take most of the summer for the foundry to cast it into the finished bronze figure.
