A series of bizarre attacks on horses in Scotland has raised suggestions about possible links to black magic or witchcraft.

Grampian police told Horsetalk they were continuing to investigate instances of what they called cruelty to animals at a Laurencekirk farm.

About 25 horses on one farm have had hair cut from their tails, in attacks which are believed to have occurred at night. Even foals have been targeted.

It is understood hair is also being cut from the sides of the animals.

The property owner has put up a £500 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution.

Such ritualistic attacks have been linked to black magic or witchcraft in the past.

Grampian police said they were keeping "an open mind" on suggestions there may be links to witchcraft.

"Several lines of inquiry are currently being explored," a police spokesman said.

"However, the investigating officer, at Laurencekirk, Constable Dean Meller is urging anyone with information to contact him on 0845 600 5 700 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information will be received in the strictest confidence."
