No fresh cases of equine influenza have been identified in more than a week in New South Wales.

"The situation remains very encouraging," a spokesman for the state's Department of Primary Industries said.

"Admittedly, there has been limited surveillance testing over the Christmas-New Year break, but this is still very good news."

It was more important than ever for horse owners to report any suspicion of equine flu infection, the spokesman said.

The number of infected properties in NSW stood at 680 yesterday.
