Since April 2008 Hanna Stud is located in the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand, close to Rangiora, in North Canterbury. Our farm comprises a little over 50 ha of mainly flat fertile free draining soils, north of the Ashley river in an area called Okuku.

Hanna Stud was first established in 1994, in Palmerston North, Manawatu, originally breeding mainly partbred Spanish horses. Shortly after this, we have specialized in Pure Spanish Horses (Caballos de Pura Raza Espanola - PRE), having lived in the Waikato (Cambridge) and Franklin Districts (Waiuku) between 1996 and 2008 before making our final move to the South Island.

Our stud is located an easy 30 minutes drive from the Christchurch International Airport, in an area well suited for horse breeding and a South Island centre for Standardbreds and Sporthorse breeding.

The new farm has been developed to provide a safe environment for horses, including a majority of post and rail horse fencing, with separate grazing areas for our stallions and young colts, our broodmares and, foals, separate stable complex for stallions and mares, round yard and riding arena and breeding facilities.

The stallion paddocks are double fenced at between 1.60 to 1.8ms to allow for extra safety without compromising the need for free exercise, social interaction and companionship amongst stallions and colts. The majority of paddocks are of generous size to allow for year round free exercise and sufficient pasture cover.

The mare paddocks are of generous size, allowing for plenty of space for groups of mares with or without foals.

Adult stallions are exercised regularly throughout the year, being taken on trail rides as well as trained in dressage. Mares receive basic training before being turned out in the broodmare herd.

With our horses living on pasture throughout the year, all our paddocks are regularly cleaned from manure and groomed as part of an ongoing pasture management and parasite control scheme. In addition, regular soil testing, fertiliser application, weed management and pH adjustment of soil ensures year-round growth of quality pasture for optimum development of young, growing horses. Horses are supplemented on a regular basis with premixed grain/Lucerne feeds including mineral, vitamin and trace element supplements.

Our stud also produces its own supplementary feed in form of meadow hay and Lucerne as well as some grains and grain based hays.

At Hanna PRE Stud we take pride in high quality maintenance and presentation of our horses and their environment. Stud inspection is welcome and can be arranged by appointment.
