Balalaika

(E'arlia Jarim x Bint Breeze by Waimeha Eclipse)
very athletic mare, approx 14.2hh. 5 years. Bay with white markings and black points. Ideal riding type.

Aspen Hills Eclipse (Shalom La Ish x AA Suzanne)

Eclipse is a grey mare of about 14.2hh. Her first foal, Trace of Light, was shown lightly and she won a classic action class of 12 as a yearling. Eclipse was then trained in and began her endurance career in 2003, but the aggravation of an old hock injury forced her retirement. Known as 'Dragon' because of her habit of chasing riders away from "her" herd, she was a very nice ride with very even paces and a steady way of going.

Rosewood Marika (Kandahar ibn Kazra x Sherwood Athene)

Rosewood Marika When she arrived Marika was quite a handful. She pulled back if you tied her up. She tended to stand on her hind legs when you put your foot in the stirrup and the first time she went on the road, she would only go on the verge if someone walked in front of her. Each time she went to a ride, the first person on her would wonder what was going to happen, her energy levels would be so high! She was stitched to her friends and hated going alone. It wasn't until after we had mastered all these little difficulties that we were told what a good rodeo horse she had been and lots of other little stories! Marika did a couple of seasons of CTR, in which she either won or placed in all her rides. She then won the Open 60km CTR North Island Champs against strong competition. The offer of a repeat challenge at the Nationals never eventuated as Kirstin and Marika followed their 60km CTR with a 40km ride the next day in Endurance and they were hooked. They then did three 80km Endurance rides between January and Easter and qualified for the 100km Junior National Championships. Marika did 70km of that ride and was vetted out lame - it was a very mild lameness and after 2 hours she was fine again. That was her last ride as she bulldozed through a fence in August, ripping a large piece from the back of her leg. The injury didn't look too bad, but it is often what you can't see at first which does the long term damage. After five weeks of nursing, she developed a large swelling above the knee, which was shown on X-ray to be permanent ligament damage. Very much to the disappointment of her rider she, like Talia, has retired to the broodmare paddock.

Flight of Fancy (Earth Wind and Fire x Ocean Flight)

Flight of Fancy was bred by Belinda Simons, by her pure Polish stallion Earth Wind and Fire and from Ocean Flight by Cashmere Pegasus Bay. Fancy is a very placid mare who took a beginner rider through her first full season of CTR in the Wellington area to win the National Junior distance award for CTR plus the rider award and the horse and rider award. Fancy broke her accessory carpal bone two years ago in a paddock accident and had to be retired. She has already produced for us a stunning little colt by Aranui Double Band who has his mother's calm nature and extravagant action.

AA Suzanne (Echolade x Araleigh Sue)

AA Suzanne and 2003 foal Echo Dynamo
Suzie with her 2003 foal, Echo Dynamo (Waimeha Viscount)

Aspen Hills turned to studs with established breeding programmes when it began. "Suzie" is here because I saw her at Araleigh Arabians as a yearling and she stood out for me in a bunch of other horses. With her great big black eyes and her dappled brown colour she made quite an impression. Little did I know at the time, the Echolades would soon emerge as very competitive endurance horses. Echoladetraces in his sire line to the mighty US horse Aladdinn and I can see likeness, even this many generations down, between Suzie and her famous ancestor. Especially in her eye, ears, the length of rein and the wonderful fine coat. On the dam line, Araleigh Sue is by Santarabia Shammar by Sindh from Hamoonette (Silver Moonlight). Her pedigree is full of performance lines. Suzie has had seven foals for us, she breeds beautiful, athletic foals with friendly temperaments.

AH Starlight Express (Simeon Shanaan x Fantasy by Nisab)

Starlight Express is a grey mare born in 1995. She has had three foals for us, all stunning grey filles with amazing temperaments. Starlight Express is very typical of the Shanaan foals, she is a lovely, harmonious mover, with a powerful trot which we see when she goes to stud as there are no flats here. She is a very classical mare. Her dam line traces back through Jasmine to Ramah, and those wonderful Bostocks mares, Capricious and Fantasy.

AH Nada bint Racca (Shalom La Ish x Racca)

"Nada" is a 15hh sister to AH Elegy. She is the last foal of Racca and carries on her tradition with her wonderful nature and strong powerful movement. Racca's siblings are to the fore in the pedigrees of many endurance horses - Araleigh Myra (AA Parade), Amina (Malika Sharamina and Sonny via Saamen Roland, her son), Sharabi, Riffaletta. It is a powerful performance family. Nada's sire Shalom La Ish has progeny only just starting to make their mark, and their riders swear by them. His first 100km horse completed at the 2003 Endurance Nationals.

AH Santa Ana (Wind n Fire x AA Suzanne)

Santa Ana is a three-year-old bay mare with huge acceleration and a fantastic and powerful trot. Not only that, she is a big and beautiful mare, with lovely big eyes, a dish, the classical jibbah, wonderful arch of throat, and she stands over a lot of ground making her look much bigger than she is. She combines the best of her sire and dam.

Desert Star's Bint Narelle Desert Star's Bint Narelle
(Simeon Shanaan x Hestbank Narelle by Naaddel)

Bint Narelle is a young grey mare by the same sire as our lovely Starlight Express. There is quite a lookalike quality between them, but Narelle is slightly bigger. Her sire is an Asfour son, and her dam is by Naaddel from a Nahda mare, so quite closely line-bred. She is an extremely friendly mare.
