HEllo,,,

How are you all? I'm fine, so is Farhanna. It was great to see you at Waimeha last season. Farhanna has recently been turned out because we have been having thunder storms and all of my horses stay out during the winter. She is doing 2 rides a week but thats it at the moment. What the weather been like for you guys?

I hope to see you at some more rides this season. I'm hoping to get her up to open this season as well as myself. I'm planning on breeding from her when i'm at universaty in 3 years. I have a stallion lined up. He's beautiful, a chestnut with 4 socks and a blaze- 14.3hh. Have you bred from her? I love all of your horses!!!

Well look foreward to seeing you next season.

Hi
I have a colt foal by Aspen Hills Shell Fire born Sept 2006 out of a 16hh thoroughbred mare. He looks very much like his sire but estimate his height will be approx 16hh. I am still learning about handling foals as he is my first one. The mares name is Chenoa and I have named him Aspenoa and will be registering him as an anglo arab. Thanks for the sight it is really interesting seeing his sire as a foal.

Hi, I've been in touch with you guys a few times before - a friend of mine has just bought AH Grey Gun (Corrin) who I have loved for so long, I am so excited to be getting him, and he will be with us forever :) I sadly lost my pony who I'd owned for almost 10 years in a paddock accident recently so Corrin will be my new best friend. Will send you some pics when he arrives (hopefully tomorrow). He's had a tendon injury :( but we will walk him out over winter and the vet reckons he should come right, so fingers crossed!!!

Just to let you know that Kehua is coming along fine - he's a slow maturer - all legs and more legs! (He'll be over 15 hands and a bit more if he ever grows into them) My daughter has started him .. bareback - took to that as he does to everything - quietly confident - Second day he was backed/ridden we went for a short trail ride .. He's developing an absolutely exotic head with scalloped ears .. And of course spoiled thoroughly!

We have had some wonderful help from horse experts in solving the kinds of problems everyone who has horses runs into( feet, fractures, cataracts, backs, mud rash etc) - it is so nice to have people so willing to give of their best to help us.

I was just looking at your article on breeding and selling and costs involved and had a great chuckle!
I totally agree with you - I have been breeding a POA mare here - the first year this is what I spent:
stud fee - $500 US ($750.00 CDN)
Semen collection and shipping - $495 x 3 tries = $1485.00 CDN
Vet fees for 3 cycles - Approx 300 x 3 = $900 CDN.
Now the vet missed the mare twice due to not listening to me and breeding when the mare was NOT read (get a vet who does AI well) and the 3rd time the airline lost the shipment....
Now I am broke having spent $3135.00 CDN - no foal yet.
This year I used a different vet (oh did I mention that the stallion is not the greatest to ship from??? so has to be inseminated into the mare within a few hours of her ovulating? which is why Vet #1 missed). Vet # 2 comes out day 2 and 3 of cycle - Ultrasounds and checks mare - Day 3 mare was 30MM decided that we give Ovuplant on day 4 as she should be at least 35mm (or more) and breed day 5 (24 hours post ovuplant injection)- turns out mare on day five of breeding did not progress as far as we wanted - shes only 35mm - breed anyway check next day ovulated! yahooo1 - wait 18 days - Nope no foal! so start again - this time we give Ovuplant 36 hours prebreeding - so the checks - run to airport run home bredmare, wait 18 days tease this time not in season - still not believing she caught, get vet out ultrasound 21 days - yahooo a baby!!!!

So this year I spent:
collection and shipping - $292.06 US = $470 CDN (approx) x s shippments = $940.00 CDN
Vet coming out to check mare etc. - approx $700.00 CND
so that is $1640.00 CDN for this year, $3135.00 for the first year giving me a grand total of $4775.00 CDN and finally a foal that may be worth $3500.00 US (or $4500.00 CDN) by the time its 2 years old....
Now for me as a breeder of horses you take the good with the bad and hope that the next foal will be less cost so it averages out in the long run... at least that's the theory.
But one thing is for sure - you better darn well have a mare well worth all this stress ad expense because otherwise your just wasting your money and the life of another poor helpless horse. Thank goodness my mare has been a great show mare and the stallion the top leading show / breeding stallion in the US.... So my chances are good to sell a top quality foal.
Loved your article... KLC
