The Influence of Semna

Semna was registered in Volume 7 of the Arab Horse Stud Book, UK. She was a chestnut mare of the Dahieh Om Aamr of the Ibn Hemsi's strain. She was foaled in 1943 by Kataf (Outlaw xKateefah), her dam was Caswa (Sirdar x Mecca II). Thus her dam was a ¾ sister to that great dam of endurance horses, Gipsy Maid. Gipsy Maid was by Sirdar from Salome, Salome by Ishmael from Mecca II Ishmael was like Sirdar, by Shahzada.

Kataf was by the desert bred Outlaw from Kateefah (Uns el Wujood x Jawi Jawi).

I didn't see Semna, but she was a very prolific broodmare. the foals I have been able to trace are:

  • Mares:
    • Geni by Meladdin
    • Tasmin by Meladdin
    • Silver Fern by Meladdin
    • Nadine by Nar
    • Sparkle by Silver Sparkle
    • Saadia by Sabah
    • Shirin by Aladdin
  • Colts:
    • Radiant by Meladdin
    • Koriesh by Silver Sparkle

These horses were all bred by Mrs R H Mitchell, of Palmerston North, and most of the mares became foundation stock for the early studs in New Zealand.

Sparkle was a very pretty liver chestnut mare born in 1954 who was bought by Lester Marshall and bred some very successful show mares. El Diamond Sparkle was sold to Cheryl Skinner and bred El Ring of Fire by Indian Fire Dance, El Indian Sun, El Fantasy Firedance, El Kheir Bachisse, El Kheir Shakas, El Kheir Shakez, El Kheir Shako, El Kheir Shazwah (colts) El Dancing Diamond, El Diamond Goddess, El Indian Princess, El Kheir Bint Shaka, El Pride 'n Joy.

Sparkle is also the dam of Nassemna who was by Nassaba. Bred by Lester Marshall, she was owned by AM Bowron, and then Mrs E D Goulter of Blenheim. Nassemna foaled Hadley Rille by Othello in 1971,Nasella by Iliad in 1973, Kashka by Repartee in 1975, Nahdia by Nahda in 1976, Babouka by Nahda in 1977, Roscommon Nassah by Nahda in 1978 and Zarah by Nahda in 1980. Hadley Rille was a lovely little mare, and is the dam of Tracey Rhode's stalllion Mizar by Nahda, Lansberg by Othello, the mares, Nahrilla by Nahda, Cassini by Nahda, Hestbank Chloe by Milands Royal Fashion, Hestbank Silmaril by Milands Royal Fashion , and the colts Hestbank Atash by Milands Royal Fashion. Kashka was bred back to her sire for the fillies Nah-Tasha and Nah-Tricia and the colt Nah-Khan. Nahdia (exp Aust) foaled Nah Rehle B.G.A. by Nahdia. Babouka went to Barhara and Ernie Wilson and produced many foals for them, including Malton Naabouka by Roscommon Nassah. Malton Babylon and Malton Abraham, colts by Jesmond Smaroel, Malton Magic Touch and Touch of Joy by Touch of Magic. Nassemna was thus very prolific, and her descendants are spread much further than the few mentioned here.

Kilalla was another of Sparkle's fillies, she is the dam of Bint Killala and Silver Flame by Saracen Karim. Bint Killala is the dam of Kadirah by Naadel and Shaki Killala by Ibn Karim, as well as many colts. Sliver Flame produced a number of colts including Fernbank Kaukab by Ibn Naadel and Flaming Star by Saracen Karim and the fillies Fernbank Silver Fantasy and Anka Zahra by Ibn Naaddel, and Fernbank Khadija, also by Ibn Naaddel.

There appear to be no registered offspring of Geni, Radiant or Koriesh in the purebred stud books, but Mrs R D McGRegor of "Woodstock" stud, bred two nice colts by Surur from Geni, Gilban who was successful in the show ring and Woodstock Royal Applause. Geni also had a filly to Surur, but it has also been lost to the breed. Radiant is recorded in the NZ Pony Breeders Stud Book, Volume 1, as having left some partbreds. However Geni's full sisters, Tasmin and Silver Fern have gone on to establish some very important lines, along with their half sisters by a number of other stallions.

Nadine was a liver chestnut mare by Nar. She started her breeding career with Ralph Shaw who sent her to the Clarkson's Awatea Stud in Maraekakaho, Hawkes Bay. This lovely property had long sloping hills with a stream running through it. As a diversion, we sent Surona there in foal to Shereef to be bred to Othello. She had her first foal, a colt, Jehol right by that stream the night she arrived with no ill effects.

Nadine foaled Libanah in 1969 to Othello (she went to Brian Ross in Gore), El Majestic Lady, a filly who died, owned by Alan Skinner and by Arabian Park Majestic, Athaliah by Othello in 1970, El Indian Fireking in 1975, again for Alan Skinner, Amorino in 1976 (these two by Indian Fire Dance (imp).

Libanah has 13 foals in the Stud Books up until Volume 7 all but two under the Dell or Dellmount Prefix. Athaliah produced almost as efficiently for the Skinners.

Semna's story is too influential to complete in one try. So next time more will be revealed about this very influential mare line in the next issue, tracking through Leonie Bennet's Stud, Araleigh Arabians, and horses like Sahara, Cairo, Shalimar Shazahn and many others.

Part II

Earlier, we looked at the two chestnut mares, Nadine and Sparkle and briefly mentioned those offspring of Semna who have been lost to the Stud Book; now we turn to the greys:

  • Tasmin
  • Silver Fern
  • Saadia by Sabah
  • Shirin by Aladdin

Shirin was the eldest of these and should probably have been first to be mentioned. She was a ¾ sister to Geni, Tasmin, Silver Fern, and the "lost" colt Radiant. She was a grey mare, and was owned early in her life, by Mrs EM Small of Palmerston North, a great friend of Myra Napier, who owned Surur - the result of which was the well-known grey stallion Sahara, who when owned by Mrs Bevins, Christchurch was a very successful show horse and sire. Sahara left few purebreds, Cairo, a liver chestnut stallion went to Gore where he sired some foals for Dellmount Stud, and Czarak, out of Forina, who bred a number of foals under the Sunnybrae prefix for Mary Brosnahan. His full sister Shalimar went to Ross's stud - of her foals, Dellmount Shahreem became a prolific broodmare, having foals from a number of different stallions including El Nazeer, The Ambassador, and Cyrasa.

Dellmount Ishtar (ex Adrastrea, sister to Claudius, half sister to Aethon) was another of Cairo's foals, for Trevor Glidden she bred Bint Ishtar, by Repartee, Cyrana and Cyrasan by Cyrasa, Caironia by Arabesque Aziese, Ishmal and Tarshah by Ibn Grojec and Rockdon Maedhros by El Nazeer. For Helena Patchett she bred Oeania by Ibn Grojec, a foundation mare for Belinda Simons.

Dellmount Carisma was from Libanah (Othello x Nadine thus tracing to Semna on both sides). Was the dam of Shalina by Illiad who produced foals for Woodlau, Taralea and Gowandale Studs.

Cairo also sired Fourouk, and Dellmount Narduk.

Shirin's name was made with Sahara, but that was not the end. His full sister, Habiba was bought as a foundation mare for Melville Gubb's Araleigh Stud. She has proven to be an incredible producer especially through her daughter Araleigh Sue, by Santarabia Shammar (Sindh x Hamoonette, by Silver Moonlight). Habiba produced two colts and the mares Heidi (exp) (Claudius), Sue, Hilaryand Judith (Claudius), Habero (AP Bandero), and Shireyn (Gay Aristocrat), all with the Araleigh Prefix.

Araleigh Judith became a foundation mare for Alison Stewards Karamea Stud, producing a number of fillies under the Karamea Prefix, Zahra, Farah, Gazelle, and Tara. Alison has already described the phenomenal show success of these mares. Farah has produced Aria, Evita, Falahna, and Kalilah. Fahlana went on to produce Leilahna who was supreme champion at this year's North Island Championships, and Larissa, the Champion mare. Their full sister was recently sold to the South Island to carry on the good cause. Karamea won the Princess Alia Trophy at the Auckland Easter Show, with another filly from this family. Araleigh Judith, like many mares from this family provided a sound foundation from which a careful breeder could develop very good arabians with type as well as performance ability, as many of the Karamea geldings show.

Araleigh Sue was retained at the stud and from her were bred half a dozen colts, and the mares, AA Suanne (Gai Aristocrat), AA Suellen (Gai Cadet), AA Suzanne (Echolade). Suellen began long distance training in the hands of Laurel Thornton, showing a lot of promise. She had a colt by Bold Fyre, which is now owned along with its dam, by Greg and Jaki Bickerton. In the hands of Linda Te Maipi, Suellen, by Gai Cadet, at 18 years of age, became the National 80km Trail Ride Champion.

Shirin was bought by Doug and Lorraine Clarkson but she was an irregular breeder - they bred Baghdad by El Saala - having foals every second year. She then moved on to Terry Innes where she had two colts, Shimba by Othello, and Shiraz by Idyllic (Razaz x Silver Dawn). These were her last live foals.

Tasmin was born in 1962 - she was another of the foundation mares for Araleigh stud and produced the mares Taseyn, Paleta and Tazeta under that stud's prefix. She produced many colts. Taseyn proved a better filly producer than her mother for Taxzin Stud.

Silver Fern (Meladdin) was owned by Chris Bennett, and early arabian enthusiast who studied pedigrees and conformation minutely. He loved the hard dry bone of his mare, and her powerful and attractive movement. He was also a great fan of Nurmana, and her son, Nassaba. The first foal of Silver Fern was Ibn Aqil, by Aqil, a spectacular young horse with the best of Bostocks breeding being by Abiram from Capricious). He was followed by Rakeebah by Santarabia Bahran (also by Abiram from Our Queen), and Bahreena by the same sire. Ishmael Crescent and Silver Stardust and Silver Saker were colts by Othello. In 1982, Silver Fern produced Silver Fern Zarafa by Star of Arabia El Nath, followed in 1983 by Silver Fern Sharia.

Bahreena had Silver Fern Bahrello (Othello) and Silver Fern Falima & Silver Fern Mitra by Star of Arabia el Nath. Falima became the dam of the well-known Shalimar Shahzahn. Forella, one of Shahzahn's daughters is a wonderful broodmare for Noel Hellyer.

Unfortunately Chris died in a motor accident - a loss to New Zealand - but his mother Leonie carried on the stud, breeding much as Chris would have done.
