Reports are coming out of Illinois that the slaughter line at the last remaining horse abattoir in the United States has fallen silent.

The Illinois abattoir has been the only one of the three plants that has been slaughtering horses for human consumption since a recent court ruling shut the plants down in Texas.

A federal court decision released yesterday effectively stopped the United States Department of Agriculture from providing mandatory inspection services for a fee - a decision that would force the plant to shut.

There is still no word on whether an appeal will be lodged.
