Swiss police used a helicopter to lift a horse to safety after the animal tumbled into the chilly Rhône during a riverside ride.

The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon, when the rider reportedly lost his balance and was unseated. The horse slipped on the icy pathway and fell into the river.

Local police called in the mountain rescue service, Air Zermatt, to lift the horse to safety. Firefighters were also summoned to help.

The horse and rider escaped injury in the ordeal.

Pictures of the rescue were placed on Facebook by the Police Cantonale du Valais, which described the rescue as a story that ended well.
