A woman is seriously ill in a Melbourne hospital after her car collided with three horses which had apparently escaped from a property.
The woman, in her late 60s, was driving with a friend in Gisborne South on Thursday morning when the collision occurred.
She received head and facial injuries and was taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in critical condition.
Her passenger was unhurt but was treated for shock.
Two of the horses died in the impact and the third was euthanised at the scene.
Authorities said the accident happened on Millett Road around 6.30am, when it was still dark.
The car was being driven west at the time of the collision.
The road was closed for about an hour.
