Halswell youngster Steffi Whittaker notched up her fourth individual Pony Grand Prix win of the season aboard Moonlight Glow at Canterbury Show Jumping’s Xmas Cracker 2 Star Show at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, today.
Fourteen started the two-round competition with no combinations going clear in the first round over the technical track designed by visiting Southland course designer Barry Manson. Having just one rail down in the first round, Whittaker sealed the win with a smart clear in the second. Ashburton’s Emma Waite and Spring Brooke finished second, with newcomer Molly Buist-Brown on Miss Mae West, third.
The win topped off a great weekend for Whittaker having also taken out the 1.20m Pony Championship on Saturday.
Ashburton’s Susie Hayward returned to winning form with Andretti, narrowly taking out the Horse Grand Prix, but they were pushed every step of the way by young rider Brittany Whelan (Dunedin) on George Jetson.
Having posted the only clear in the first round, Hayward and Andretti had the advantage of being the last combination to go in the second round. Second to last to ride, Whelan gave it her all producing a stunning clear in a sizzling time, applying the pressure on Hayward. To win Hayward needed to go clear, which she duly did, finishing with the only double clear of the competition, but more than 10 seconds behind Whelan’s time.
The hotly-contested 26 strong Caledonian Amateur Rider came down to a four fault jump off with eight horses competing against the clock, where Melanie Morris (Rangiora) on Malluka came up trumps, clear in a time of 37.35.
The KiwiSpan Junior Rider also produced a strong contest with eight of the 20 starters going through to a jump-off. Eventual honours went to Hayley Morris (Rangiora) on Livewire II clear in 35.79, just ahead of Davina Waddy (Cheviot) on Millburn Maringo clear in 36.35, with Rose Alfeld (Weedons) on My Super Nova third clear in 37.96, having earlier won the Seven-Year-Old Series class.
Saturday’s highlight was the Gilltrap Audi South Island Mitavite Young Rider which came down to an exciting two-horse race against the clock. There was nothing in it at the finish, with Olivia Robertson on Ngahiwi Cisco just piping Whelan and George Jetson by six tenths of a second.
